THE LATEST -
November-December 2021

So much happening - we’ve been active!

  • In November we gathered virtually for a well-attended Zoom meeting.

  • In January 2021, the members ratified draft bylaws that describe how the organization will operate once a new board is elected.

  • We have also filed articles of incorporation with the State of New York and await paperwork that recognizes the LGSJ as a not-for-profit corporation.

  • The LGSJ Transition Team is working with neighbors to identify candidates for the new Board of Directors and will hold an election of to install that board in 2022.

NAME CHANGE!
The Lefferts Grand St. James Association

With 48% of the vote, our new name is official and reflects our growth!

Thank you to everyone for voting and sharing your input. Now that we've selected a new name, we can incorporate with the state of New York.
In the coming weeks, we'll be changing the name of our WhatsApp group, main email account and this email list to reflect our new name.

We were thrilled to also get a lot of input and feedback in our survey that accompanied with the voting form - we asked:

"Do you have any comments or ideas about how the association can support our community?"
These were the comments:

  1. You’re doing a great job!

  2. Respect the history & include everyone

  3. Stay true to the roots

  4. discussing ways to cleanly and properly put things for donation outside - maybe set a weekend yard stoop sale in late spring?

  5. designated times for loud music

  6. I like some suggestions given by others to offer academic scholarships.

  7. Keep up the great work!

  8. Thank you all that’s already being worked on it’s great. One idea: “Free Stuff” Block Sales or swap meet on the block. Another - text alerts - for me, Text alerts would be helpful over email EG “hey you good morning get of your rear and join us for block clean up today...”, vote on the name etc.. :)

  9. The new group is doing a fantastic job!

  10. Very impressed with your work so far--no new ideas at present.

  11. - Maybe a ongoing list WhatsApp group for errands needed for Neighbors

  12. Food bank

  13. Resources, City and organization information, neighborhoods programs, helping the most vulnerable population in our neighborhood

  14. None offhand but I would love to help out in any way possible!

  15. Not off the top of my head, but happy to now be a part of the group!

  16. Community refrigerator - Must be on City property, filled with food that would be discarded

  17. block party!

  18. Keeping everyone informed as you have been doing

  19. Public and Traffic Safety; Parking Privileges; Rat Infestation Elimination, Control and Prevention; Food and Clothing Donation Drop-off

  20. UMOJA means to strive for and maintain unity in the family, community and beyond. I think the associate can support the community by hosting drives to give back to the less fortunate including school supplies for back to school, food drives, bring back the block parties to include st james and lefferts just to name a few. I would love to volunteer to help out if needed. I am a mom of three daughters ages 1, 5, and 10 so it is important for them to understand community!

We have lots to look forward to this year, including events, cleanups, and our first election for the Board of Directors.
We will keep everyone updated.

…The primary function of block associations is to make a massive, often-anonymous metropolis feel friendlier and more familial. “It’s a vehicle for making a big city into a small town,” she says. “It’s about neighbors helping neighbors, and becoming a close-knit family.”
